54 pairs of deadstock Prairie Underground denim leggings (mistakenly made from a non-stretch denim) were overdyed lime green and delivered to Janelle Abbott (JRAT) at the end of 2019 to become a collection of one-off garments for Prairie’s April 2020 Earth Day exhibition. Due to the pandemic, however, the exhibition was only presented virtually and Janelle decided to postpone the collaboration until the right moment…which has finally arrived! Inspired by the cut of the ruched leggings themselves, and through her signature zero waste methodology, Janelle spent one month deconstructing and reconfiguring the original Prairie Underground pieces into this series of over 30 one-of-one garments and accessories. Even scraps and seams were sewn into yarn and woven into floor pillows. Many garments wrap and tie in order to accommodate a wide variety of body shapes and sizes.
