14 Hours

2024

From April 15th-20th 2024, during Fashion Revolution Week, artist Janelle Abbott sewed for 14 hours a day, 6 days in a row, in order to surrogate and demonstrate the daily lived experience of garment workers across the globe. Her performance was live in the Prairie Underground gallery as well as live-streamed on Twitch to simulate the kinds of surveillance garment workers experience from management and CCTV. She was paid $3.50 a day for her labor, in keeping with the average income of a Bangladeshi garment worker. Learn more about Janelle’s intention and experience here.
